In 2008, we added this 600 sq ft great room addition onto an 1800 sq ft house. The original part of the house ends where the three boxed in columns are. There was a French Door in the middle and big sliding windows on either side. The boxed in columns enclose structural columns.
In between the time we completed the addition and before we boxed in the columns, the homeowners and I spent two years figuring out what we were going to do here. We came up with lots of ideas and rejected them. Since the opening between the posts is not that big, the ideas involved cabinets to completely enclose (blocked the light) or partially enclose the posts. Finally they came up with this simple idea.
Since the woman of the house is from Belgium, this side says Bienvenue (Welcome) and the other side, the kitchen side, says Bon Appétit! (See more Carved Signs here.) I gave her a choice of six fonts. With some fonts, the letters line up seamlessly. With this one however, I had do a lot of adjustment to the letters and spacing to get everything to line up.
